ATEX vs IECEx for Hazardous-Area Lighting: What Should Buyers Check?

ATEX and IECEx address equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres through different frameworks. ATEX establishes EU legal requirements and conformity-assessment procedures. IECEx is an international certification system based on applicable IEC standards.

For lighting buyers, neither an ATEX logo nor an IECEx reference is enough to approve a luminaire. The documents must cover the exact model, configuration and intended installation.

This guide explains the differences and provides a practical document checklist for contractors, consultants and procurement teams in Saudi Arabia and the GCC.

The European Commission explains that Directive 2014/34/EU defines requirements and conformity-assessment procedures before relevant products are placed on the EU market. IECEx separately explains that its certified equipment scheme requires independent testing and certification.

Does Every ATEX Product Require the Same Certificate?

No. ATEX conformity-assessment procedures depend on the equipment and category.

Some routes require notified-body involvement. Others allow the manufacturer to demonstrate conformity without third-party product certification.

Consequently, “ATEX certified” should lead to a request for the applicable documentation and assessment route. It should not be treated as proof that every product underwent the same process.

An EU-type examination certificate also does not replace the manufacturer’s EU Declaration of Conformity where that declaration is required.

Does IECEx Automatically Replace ATEX?

No. The schemes can share technical evidence, but their documents and purposes differ.

IECEx test and quality-assessment information can support ATEX conformity assessment. That does not make an IECEx certificate, by itself, the complete ATEX documentation package.

When a specification requests both, ask the supplier to provide the relevant documents for each and identify any differences in model coverage or operating conditions.

What Should Saudi and GCC Buyers Specify?

Start with the project’s approved technical and procurement requirements.

Clarify:

  • Whether the specification requires ATEX, IECEx or both.
  • The hazardous-area classification and required equipment protection level.
  • Relevant gas or dust groups.
  • Temperature limits and environmental conditions.
  • Required technical submissions and approval milestones.
  • Any additional market-entry or client requirements that must be confirmed.

An international certificate should not be treated as automatic approval for every country, project or installation.

How Do You Verify an IECEx Certificate?

Use the official IECEx online certificate system to locate the certificate.

Compare the record with the supplier’s submission:

  1. Certificate reference: Does it match the number provided?
  2. Manufacturer: Is the quoted product connected to the manufacturer identified?
  3. Equipment description: Does the certificate cover the relevant luminaire family?
  4. Model designation: Is the complete ordering code within the documented scope?
  5. Issue and status: Are you reviewing the appropriate certificate issue and current status?
  6. Protection marking: Does it agree with the offered nameplate?
  7. Conditions and limitations: Can the project meet them?

IECEx makes equipment certificate information available through its online system. Check the record rather than relying solely on a cropped certificate image or catalogue badge.

If the quoted brand or model differs from the certificate, request documented clarification of its coverage.

What Do “X” and “U” Mean in IECEx Certificate Numbers?

These suffixes identify information that needs attention.

SuffixMeaningBuyer’s action
XSpecific conditions of use applyRead the conditions and establish how they will be met
UThe certificate concerns an Ex componentConfirm how the component is assessed within the complete equipment

A component certificate does not independently approve a complete luminaire for installation. IECEx distinguishes component certificates from equipment certificates and identifies the associated limitations.

Which Parts of the Ex Marking Should You Compare?

Read the marking as a complete statement, supported by the certificate and instructions.

Marking elementWhat it helps identify
Protection symbolsThe techniques used to control ignition risks
Equipment groupThe gas or dust grouping covered
Temperature informationRelevant surface-temperature limits
Equipment Protection LevelThe assessed protection level
Ambient-temperature informationPermitted surrounding operating conditions
Certificate referenceThe supporting certification record

IECEx certificate guidance identifies these elements as part of the equipment’s marking information. A product may combine more than one protection technique.

Avoid approving equipment based on a single term such as “IIC,” “IP66” or “explosion-proof.”

Does a Certificate Cover Every Voltage, Battery and Accessory Option?

Do not assume that it does.

Ask whether the documents cover the offered:

  • Wattage and electrical supply.
  • Driver or control configuration.
  • Emergency battery option, where offered.
  • Ambient-temperature range.
  • Cable entries and supplied connection components.
  • Mounting arrangement where relevant to the assessment.

An optional emergency configuration should be reviewed against its own documented operating conditions. A standard model’s brochure should not be used to fill missing information by assumption.

When reviewing Alrouf’s B-Series high bay, Ex-Proof Linear Light or AR-EX-SC hand lamp, request the documentation covering the exact model and configuration offered.

Confirm which ATEX or IECEx documents apply, including any restrictions affecting voltage, emergency options, operating temperature or accessories.

What Should a Lighting Technical Submission Include?

DocumentPurpose
Datasheet and complete ordering codeIdentify the proposed equipment
Proposed nameplate or marking detailsConnect the product to its protection information
Applicable certificates and schedulesEstablish scope and conditions
EU Declaration of Conformity, where applicableRecord the manufacturer’s conformity declaration
Installation and maintenance instructionsIdentify permitted installation and service arrangements
Drawings and accessory scheduleDefine the supplied assembly
Photometric informationSupport the lighting design
Compliance scheduleIdentify conformity, exclusions and deviations against the project specification

Resolve differences between the quotation, datasheet and certificate before approving the submission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IECEx better than ATEX?

They serve different purposes. Select equipment against the project’s requirements and review the relevant evidence rather than choosing by the label alone.

Does CE marking alone establish hazardous-area suitability?

CE marking alone does not identify the complete hazardous-area protection characteristics. Review the applicable conformity documents, Ex marking and product instructions.

Does a certificate number ending in X mean the product is unsuitable?

No. It means specific conditions of use apply. Suitability depends on whether those conditions and the other selection requirements can be met.

Can a certificate for a cable gland approve the complete light fitting?

No. Component or accessory documentation does not independently establish the conformity of the complete luminaire.

Should I request documents before placing the order?

Request the technical submission early enough to resolve model coverage, conditions and deviations before committing to the equipment.
